RESUMO

ABSTRACT: Neuroendocrine neoplasms (NENs) are a diverse group of tumors that express neuroendocrine markers and primarily affect the lungs and digestive system. The incidence of NENs has increased over time due to advancements in imaging and diagnostic techniques. Effective management of NENs requires a multidisciplinary approach, considering factors such as tumor location, grade, stage, symptoms, and imaging findings. Treatment strategies vary depending on the specific subtype of NEN. In this review, we will focus on treatment strategies and therapies including the information relevant to clinicians in order to undertake optimal management and treatment decisions, the implications of different therapies on imaging, and how to ascertain their possible complications and treatment effects.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to perform gait analysis using a pressure-sensitive walkway in dogs submitted to high (total) or low amputation (partial) of one forelimb or hindlimb. STUDY DESIGN: A total of 39 dogs met the inclusion criteria. The reasons for the amputations were motor vehicle accidents in 38 dogs and possible limb malformation in 1 dog. The amputee dogs were divided into four groups: G1 (n = 10)-high forelimb; G2 (n = 10)-low forelimb; G3 (n = 9)-high hindlimb; and G4 (n = 10)-low hindlimb. For kinetic evaluation, the dogs were walked across a pressure-sensitive walkway. RESULTS: In dogs with forelimb amputation, the percentage of body weight (%BW) distribution on the contralateral forelimb was 50.7% in cases of high amputation and 55.5% in cases of low amputation, while the %BW distribution on the hindlimbs, mainly in the ipsilateral hindlimb, was 27.9% in cases of high amputation and 27.1% in cases of low amputation. In cases of high amputation of the hindlimb, the %BW distribution was 71.5% on the forelimbs and 29.7% on the contralateral hindlimb, while in cases of low amputation, the distribution was mainly for the contralateral hindlimb and ipsilateral forelimb. No statistical difference was noted between the amputation levels, except for the contralateral limb in cases of low and high amputation of the hindlimbs concerning the overload percentage and %BW distribution. CONCLUSION: The amputation level of one forelimb did not influence the %BW distribution; however, in the hindlimb, this was higher for the contralateral limb in dogs submitted to high amputation.

ABSTRACT: Neuroendocrine neoplasms (NENs) may be challenging to diagnose due to their small size and diverse anatomical locations. Hybrid imaging techniques, specifically positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) and positron emission tomography/magnetic resonance imaging (PET/MRI), represent the current state-of-the-art for evaluating NENs. The preferred radiopharmaceuticals for NEN PET imaging are gallium-68 (68Ga) DOTA-peptides, which target somatostatin receptors (SSTR) overexpressed on NEN cells. Clinical applications of [68Ga]Ga-DOTA-peptides PET/CT include diagnosis, staging, prognosis assessment, treatment selection, and response evaluation. Fluorodeoxyglucose-18 (18F-FDG) PET/CT aids in detecting low-SSTR-expressing lesions and helps in patient stratification and treatment planning, particularly in grade 3 neuroendocrine tumors (NETs). New radiopharmaceuticals such as fluorine-labeled SSTR agonists and SSTR antagonists are emerging as alternatives to 68Ga-labeled peptides, offering improved detection rates and favorable biodistribution. The maturing of PET/MRI brings advantages to NEN imaging, including simultaneous acquisition of PET and MRI images, superior soft tissue contrast resolution, and motion correction capabilities. The PET/MRI with [68Ga]Ga-DOTA-peptides has demonstrated higher lesion detection rates and more accurate lesion classification compared to PET/CT. Overall, hybrid imaging offers valuable insights in the diagnosis, staging, and treatment planning of NENs. Further research is needed to refine response assessment criteria and standardize reporting guidelines.

Background: The 2022 Society of Radiologists in Ultrasound (SRU) consensus conference recommendations support less-aggressive management of small gallbladder polyps on ultrasound versus earlier approaches and may help standardize polyp evaluation by radiologists. Objective: To assess radiologists' interreader agreement in applying the SRU recommendations for management of incidental gallbladder polyps on ultrasound. Methods: This retrospective study included 105 patients (median age, 52 years; 75 women, 27 men) with a gallbladder polyp on ultrasound (without features highly suspicious for invasive or malignant tumor) who underwent cholecystectomy between January 1, 2003 and January 1, 2021. Ten abdominal radiologists independently reviewed ultrasound examinations and, using SRU recommendations, assessed one polyp per patient for risk category (extremely low-risk, low-risk, or indeterminate risk) and possible recommendation for surgical consultation. Five radiologists were considered less-experienced (<5 years), and five more-experienced (≥5 years). Interreader agreement was evaluated. Polyps were classified pathologically as nonneoplastic or neoplastic. Results: For risk category assignments, interreader agreement was substantial among all readers (k=0.710), less-experienced readers (k=0.705), and more-experienced readers (k=0.692). For surgical consultation recommendations, interreader agreement was substantial among all readers (k=0.795) and more-experienced readers (kappa=0.740), and almost perfect among less-experienced readers (k=0.811). Of ten readers, a median of 5 (IQR, 2-8), 4 (IQR, 2-7), and 0 (IQR, 0-0) classified polyps as extremely low risk, low risk, and indeterminate risk, respectively. Across readers, the fraction of polyps classified as extremely low risk ranged from 32-72%, as low risk from 24-65%, and as indeterminate risk from 0-8%. Of ten readers, a median of 0 (IQR, 0-1) recommended surgical consultation; the fraction of polyps receiving a surgical consultation recommendation ranged from 4-22%. A total of 102/105 polyps were nonneoplastic; 3/105 were neoplastic (all benign). Based on readers' most-common assessments for the nonneoplastic polyps, the risk category was extremely low risk in 53, low risk in 48, and indeterminate risk in 1; surgical consultation was recommended in 16. Conclusion: Ten abdominal radiologists showed substantial agreement for polyp risk categorizations and surgical consultation recommendations, although areas of reader variability were identified. Clinical Impact: The findings support overall reproducibility of the SRU recommendations, while indicating opportunity for improvement.

The significant attention drawn to IrIII-complexes in recent years has boosted the development of new compounds with advantageous photophysical features. However, obtaining IrIII deep-red-emitting complexes with long lived excited state, high colour purity and high quantum yield (Φ) remains a challenging task. To address this issue, this study reports the synthesis and photophysical investigation of three novel zwitterionic complexes, [Ir(C^N)2bqdc] (C^N = ppy, phq, and bzq), with ppy = 2-phenylpyridine (Ir-pb), phq = 2-phenylquinoline (Ir-qb), bzq = benzo[h]quinoline (Ir-bb), and bqdc = potassium 2,2'-biquinoline-4,4'-dicarboxylate. These complexes exhibit high quantum yields and long emission lifetimes with high colour purity in the deep-red region. The structural characterisation carried out by usual spectroscopic measurements supports the proposed structures, while the photophysical study unveiled the high contribution of the 3MLCT state to the hybrid emitter state, as endorsed by theoretical investigations. The desired correspondence between the calculations and the experimental data set affirmed the accuracy of the theoretical analysis, which enabled us to establish a relationship between the ground-to-excited-state geometry distortion and the lifetime through the nonradiative decay (knr). Furthermore, these newly synthesized complexes exhibit quenching in the presence of molecular oxygen. In deoxygenated DMSO solution the knr values halve, increasing the quantum yields (34.0, 10.6, and 26.6%) and the lifetimes (1.13, 1.11, and 1.72 µs), while leading to quite pure deep-red emission - CIE coordinates: (0.67, 0.33), (0.60, 0.40;), (0.65, 0.35) for Ir-pb, Ir-qb, and Ir-bb, respectively. These complexes display considerable potential for a wide range of applications, such as photodynamic therapy, due to their attractive photophysical properties, and are among the deep-red-emitting complexes reported in the literature with longer lifetimes and higher Φ.

Leishmaniases, a group of diseases caused by the species of the protozoan parasite Leishmania, remains a significant public health concern worldwide. Host immune responses play a crucial role in the outcome of Leishmania infections, and several mediators that regulate inflammatory responses are potential targets for therapeutic approaches. Annexin A1 (AnxA1), an endogenous protein endowed with anti-inflammatory and pro-resolving properties, has emerged as a potential player. We have shown that during L. braziliensis infection, deficiency of AnxA1 exacerbates inflammatory responses but does not affect parasite burden. Here, we have investigated the role of AnxA1 in L. amazonensis infection, given the non-healing and progressive lesions characteristic of this infectious model. Infection of AnxA1 KO BALB/c mice resulted in increased lesion size and tissue damage associated with higher parasite burdens and enhanced inflammatory response. Notably, therapeutic application of the AnxA1 peptidomimetic Ac2-26 improves control of parasite replication and increases IL-10 production in vivo and in vitro, in both WT and AnxA1 KO mice. Conversely, administration of WRW4, an inhibitor of FPR2/3, resulted in larger lesions and decreased production of IL-10, suggesting that the effects of AnxA1 during L. amazonensis infection are associated with the engagement of these receptors. Our study illuminates the role of AnxA1 in L. amazonensis infection, demonstrating its impact on the susceptibility phenotype of BALB/c mice. Furthermore, our results indicate that targeting the AnxA1 pathway by using the Ac2-26 peptide could represent a promising alternative for new treatments for leishmaniasis.

The production of sustainable materials with properties aimed at the additive manufacturing of electrochemical sensors has gained prestige in the scientific scenario. Here, a novel lab-made composite material using graphite (G) and carbon nitride (C3N4) embedded into polylactic acid (PLA) biopolymer is proposed to produce 3D-printed electrodes. PLA offers printability and mechanical stability in this composition, while G and C3N4 provide electrical properties and electrocatalytic sites, respectively. Characterizations by Raman and infrared spectroscopies and Energy Dispersive X-rays indicated that the G/C3N4/PLA composite was successfully obtained, while electron microscopy images revealed non-homogeneous rough surfaces. Better electrochemical properties were achieved when the G/C3N4/PLA proportion (35:5:60) was used. As a proof of concept, amaranth (AMR), a synthetic dye, was selected as an analyte, and a fast method using square wave voltammetry was developed. Utilizing the 3D-printed G/C3N4/PLA electrode, a more comprehensive linear range (0.2 to 4.2 µmol/L), a 5-fold increase in sensitivity (9.83 µmol-1 L µA), and better limits of detection (LOD = 0.06 µmol/L) and quantification (LOQ = 0.18 µmol/L) were achieved compared to the G/PLA electrode. Samples of jelly, popsicles, isotonic drinks, and food flavoring samples were analyzed, and similar results to those obtained by UV-vis spectrometry confirmed the method's reliability. Therefore, the described sensor is a simple, cost-effective alternative for assessing AMR in routine food analysis.

Here, we analyze critical changes in environmental law enforcement in the Brazilian Amazon between 2000 and 2020. Based on a dataset of law enforcement indicators, we discuss how these changes explain recent Amazon deforestation dynamics. Our analysis also covers changes in the legal prosecution process and documents a militarization of enforcement between 2018 and 2022. From 2004 to 2018, 43.6 thousand land-use embargoes and 84.3 thousand fines were issued, targeting 3.3 million ha of land, and totaling USD 9.3 billion in penalties. Nevertheless, enforcement relaxed and became spatially more limited, signaling an increasing lack of commitment by the State to enforcing the law. The number of embargoes and asset confiscations dropped by 59% and 55% in 2019 and 2020, respectively. These changes were accompanied by a marked increase in enforcement expenditure, suggesting a massive efficiency loss. More importantly, the creation of so-called conciliation hearings and the centralization of legal processes in 2019 reduced the number of actual judgments and fines collected by 85% and decreased the ratio between lawsuits resulting in paid fines over filed ones from 17 to 5%. As Brazil gears up to crack-down on illegal deforestation once again, our assessment suggests urgent entry points for policy action.

Enhanced vascular permeability at the site of injury is a prominent feature in acute inflammatory pain models, commonly assessed through the Evans Blue test. However, this invasive test requires euthanasia, thereby precluding further investigations on the same animal. Due to these limitations, the integration of non-invasive tools such as IRT has been sought. Here, we aimed to evaluate the use of thermography in a common orofacial pain model that employs formalin as a chemical irritant to induce local orofacial inflammation. Male Hannover rats (290-300 g, N = 43) were used. In the first approach, radiometric images were taken before and after formalin administration, assessing temperature changes and extravasated Evans Blue. The second approach included capturing pre- and post-formalin test radiometric images, followed by cytokine measurements in excised vibrissae tissue. Rats were anesthetized for vibrissae tissue collection, allowing correlations between thermographic patterns, nocifensive behavior duration, and cytokine levels in this area. Our findings revealed a positive correlation between local temperature, measured via thermography, and vascular permeability in the contralateral (r2 = 0.3483) and ipsilateral (r2 = 0.4502) side, measured using spectrophotometry. The obtained data supports the notion that thermography-based temperature assessment can effectively evaluate vascular permeability in the orofacial region.

The occurrence of conducting vascular tissue in the pith (CVTP) of tracheophytes is noteworthy. Medullary bundles, one of the remarkable examples of CVTP, evolved multiple times across angiosperms, notably in the Caryophyllales. Yet, information on the occurrence of medullary bundles is fragmented, hampering our understanding of their structure-function relationships, and evolutionary implications. Using three plastid molecular markers (matK, rbcL, and rps16 intron), a phylogeny is constructed for 561 species of Caryophyllales, and anatomical data are assembled for 856 species across 40 families to investigate the diversity of medullary bundles, their function, evolution, and diversification dynamics. Additionally, correlated evolution between medullary bundles and successive cambia was tested. Medullary bundles are ancestrally absent in Caryophyllales and evolved in core and noncore families. They are structurally diverse (e.g. number, arrangement, and types of bundles) and functionally active throughout the plant's lifespan, providing increased hydraulic conductivity, especially in herbaceous plants. Acquisition of medullary bundles does not explain diversification rate heterogeneity but is correlated to a higher diversification rate. Disparate developmental pathways were found leading to rampant convergent evolution of CVTP in Caryophyllales. These findings indicate the diversification of medullary bundles and vascular tissues as another central theme for functional and comparative molecular studies in Caryophyllales.

A study on aerosols in the Brazilian subequatorial Amazon region, Tangará da Serra (TS) and Alta Floresta (AF) was conducted and compared to findings in an additional site with background characteristics (Manaus, AM). TS and AF counties suffer from intense biomass burning periods in the dry season, and it accounts for high levels of particles in the atmosphere. Chemical characterization of fine and coarse particulate matter (PM) was performed to quantify water-soluble ions (WSI) and black carbon (BC). The importance of explanatory variables was assessed using three machine learning techniques. Average concentrations of PM in AF and TS were similar (PM2.0, 17±10 µg m-3 (AF) and 16±11 µg m-3 (TS) and PM10-2.0, 13±5 µg m-3 (AF) and 11±7 µg m-3 (TS)), but higher than the background site. BC and SO4 2- were the prevalent components as they represented 27%-68% of particulates chemical composition. The combination of the machine learning techniques provided a further understanding of the pathways for PM concentration variability, and the results highlighted the influence of biomass burning for key sample groups and periods. PM2.0, BC, and most WSI presented higher concentrations in the dry season, providing further support for the influence of biomass burning.

Bovine laminitis disorder results in animal welfare and economic concerns in dairy and beef farms worldwide. However, the affected metabolic pathways, pathophysiologic characteristics, and inflammatory mechanisms remain unclear, hampering the development of new diagnostics. Using cerumen (earwax) as a source of volatile metabolites (cerumenomic) that carry valuable biological information has interesting implications for veterinary medicine. Nonetheless, up to now, no applications of veterinary cerumenomic assays have been made to identify bovine laminitis. This work aims to develop a veterinary cerumenomic assay for bovine laminitis identification that is non-invasive, robust, accurate, and sensitive to detecting the metabolic disturbances in bovine volatile metabolome. Twenty earwax samples (10 from healthy/control calves and 10 from laminitis calves) were collected from Nellore cattle, followed by Headspace/Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (HS/GC-MS) analysis and biomarker selection in two multivariate approaches: semiquantitative (intensity data) and semiqualitative (binary data). Following the analysis, cerumen volatile metabolites were indicated as candidate biomarkers for identifying bovine laminitis by monitoring their intensity or occurrence. In the semiquantitative strategy, the p-cresol presented the highest diagnostic figures of merit (area under the curve: 0.845, sensitivity: 0.700, and specificity: 0.900). Regarding the binary approach, a panel combining eight variables/volatiles, with formamide being the most prominent one, showed an area under the curve, sensitivity, and specificity of 0.97, 0.81, and 0.90, respectively. In summary, this work describes the first veterinary cerumenomic assay for bovine laminitis that indicates new metabolites altered during the inflammatory condition, paving the way for developing laminitis early diagnosis by monitoring the cerumen metabolites.

Background: In the beginning of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, health care professionals dealing with COVID-19 had to rely exclusively on general supportive measures since specific treatments were unknown. The subsequent waves could be faced with new diagnostic and therapeutic tools (e.g., anti-viral medications and vaccines). We performed a meta-analysis and systematic review to compare clinical endpoints between the first and subsequent waves. Methods: Three databases were assessed. The primary outcome was in-hospital mortality. The secondary outcomes were intensive care unit (ICU) mortality, ICU length of stay (LOS), acute renal failure, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) implantation, mechanical ventilation time, hospital LOS, systemic thromboembolism, myocarditis and ventilator associated pneumonia. Results: A total of 25 studies with 126,153 patients were included. There was no significant difference for the primary endpoint (OR=0.94, 95% CI 0.83-1.07, p=0.35). The first wave group presented higher rates of ICU LOS (SMD= 0.23, 95% CI 0.11-0.35, p<0.01), acute renal failure (OR=1.71, 95% CI 1.36-2.15, p<0.01) and ECMO implantation (OR=1.64, 95% CI 1.06-2.52, p=0.03). The other endpoints did not show significant differences. Conclusions: The analysis suggests that the first wave group, when compared with the subsequent waves group, presented higher rates of ICU LOS, acute renal failure and ECMO implantation, without significant difference in in-hospital or ICU mortality, mechanical ventilation time, hospital LOS, systemic thromboembolism, myocarditis or ventilator- associated pneumonia.

Determining the mechanisms by which organisms evolve thermal tolerance is crucial to predicting how populations may respond to changes in local temperature regimes. Although evidence of relationships between mitochondrial background and thermal adaptation have been found, the presence of both nuclear-encoded and mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA)-encoded proteins warrants experiments aimed at parsing out the relative role of each genome in thermal adaptation. We investigated the relative role of mtDNA-encoded products in thermal tolerance between two divergent populations of Tigriopus californicus using first-generation (F1) hybrids that vary in maternally inherited mtDNA but are heterozygous for population-specific alleles across nuclear loci. We tested two measures of thermal tolerance, (1) survivorship to acute thermal stress and (2) thermal stability of mitochondrial performance in Complex I-fueled ATP synthesis, both across a range of increasing temperatures. We found that the southern population (San Diego, CA, USA) outperformed the northern population (Strawberry Hill, OR, USA) in survivorship, and that both reciprocal F1 hybrid crosses had intermediate survival. Mitochondria from the San Diego population displayed greater stability in ATP synthesis with increasing temperatures compared with those from Strawberry Hill. Interestingly, hybrids from both cross directions had synthesis profiles that were very similar to that of Strawberry Hill. Taken together, these results suggest that the relative role of the mtDNA in these phenotypes is negligible compared with that of elements encoded by nuclear DNA in this system.

Mucosal vaccination appears to be suitable to protect against SARS-CoV-2 infection. In this study, we tested an intranasal mucosal vaccine candidate for COVID-19 that consisted of a cationic liposome containing a trimeric SARS-CoV-2 spike protein and CpG-ODNs, a Toll-like receptor 9 agonist, as an adjuvant. In vitro and in vivo experiments indicated the absence of toxicity following the intranasal administration of this vaccine formulation. First, we found that subcutaneous or intranasal vaccination protected hACE-2 transgenic mice from infection with the wild-type (Wuhan) SARS-CoV-2 strain, as shown by weight loss and mortality indicators. However, when compared with subcutaneous administration, the intranasal route was more effective in the pulmonary clearance of the virus and induced higher neutralizing antibodies and anti-S IgA titers. In addition, the intranasal vaccination afforded protection against gamma, delta, and omicron virus variants of concern. Furthermore, the intranasal vaccine formulation was superior to intramuscular vaccination with a recombinant, replication-deficient chimpanzee adenovirus vector encoding the SARS-CoV-2 spike glycoprotein (Oxford/AstraZeneca) in terms of virus lung clearance and production of neutralizing antibodies in serum and bronchial alveolar lavage (BAL). Finally, the intranasal liposomal formulation boosted heterologous immunity induced by previous intramuscular vaccination with the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine, which was more robust than homologous immunity.

INTRODUCTION: Pain in children who suffer from hypoxia-ischemia (HI) events is still not widely studied. Hypoxia-ischemia is characterized by the momentary or permanent cessation of blood flow and, consequently, of oxygen supply, becoming the main cause of encephalopathy in children. Hyperalgesia was identified in animals undergoing prenatal hypoxia-ischemia by researchers from the Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro (UERJ). Premature and asphyxiated newborns have been admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) of Pedro Ernesto University Hospital (HUPE) in Brazil and are monitored by the Outpatient Follow-up of High-Risk Newborns Project (SARAR), but no pain assessment was performed. OBJECTIVE: To assess pain in children born in high-risk situations, such as prematurity and perinatal asphyxia, with higher chances of perinatal HI, discharged from the NICU/HUPE, and followed by SARAR. METHODOLOGY: The study was approved by the HUPE Research Ethics Committee. The epidemiological, descriptive, cross-sectional study started in 2021 and finished in 2023, with the application of the pain assessment tool or instrument adapted from the Lübeck Pain-Screening Questionnaire to the caregivers and with the collection of growth and development data. The population consisted of asphyxiated infants born with a gestational age greater than 35 weeks and submitted to the Therapeutic Hypothermia protocol and premature infants discharged from the NICU between two (gestational age 1 (GA1)) and 12 years old. For most of them, pain prevalence was assessed according to its frequency and intensity, as were sociodemographic variables of the child and mother, neural alterations, and the Children's Developmental Scale (DENVER II). The percentage differences between the evaluated factors and the presence of pain were performed using Fisher's exact test and medians using the non-parametric Wilcoxon rank-sum test, both appropriate for the small sample of children. Significance levels of 10% were considered for trends and 5% for statistically significant differences. RESULTS: Of the 86 children included in our search, 26 (30%) were born with a gestational age greater than 35 weeks and diagnosed with perinatal asphyxia (hereinafter referred to as the asphyxiation group), and 60 (70%) were premature. Pain was reported by 22 (25%) children, of whom 54.4% reported moderate or severe pain. The head and abdomen were the most reported sites (36%). Differences were observed in the percentage distribution of pain between asphyxiates and premature infants (11% vs. 32%; p-value 0.061 on the Fisher test) and between females and males (34% vs. 17%; p-value 0.085 on the Fisher test). Black and Brown children had higher median pain scale values than White children (p-value < 0.027, Wilcoxon rank sum test). CONCLUSION: There is a higher prevalence of pain in girls, in the head, in premature infants, and greater intensity among Black and Brown children. Therefore, knowing the pain profile can help improve their quality of life by offering treatments.

Malaria is a parasitic infection responsible for high morbidity and mortality rates worldwide. During the disease, phagocytosis of infected red blood cells by the macrophages induces the production of reactive oxygen (ROS) and nitrogen species (RNS), culminating in parasite death. Curcumin (CUR) is a bioactive compound that has been demonstrated to reduce the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines and chemokines produced by macrophages but to reduce parasitemia in infected mice. Hence, the main purpose of this study is to investigate whether curcumin may interfere with macrophage function and polarization after Plasmodium berghei infection in vitro. In our findings, non-polarized macrophage (M0), classically activated (M1), and alternatively activated (M2) phenotypes showed significantly increased phagocytosis of infected red blood cells (iRBCs) when compared to phagocytosis of uninfected red blood cells (RBCs) 3 h after infection. After 24 h, M1 macrophages exposed to RBCs + CUR showed greater elimination capacity when compared to macrophages exposed to iRBCs + CUR, suggesting the interference of curcumin with the microbicidal activity. Additionally, curcumin increased the phagocytic activity of macrophages when used in non-inflammatory conditions (M0) and reduced the inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and arginase activities in all macrophage phenotypes infected (M0, M1, and M2), suggesting interference in arginine availability by curcumin and balance promotion in macrophage polarization in neutral phenotype (M0). These results support the view of curcumin treatment in malaria as an adjuvant, promoting a balance between pro- and anti-inflammatory responses for a better clinical outcome.

Changes in the physical and biogeochemical properties of water columns are frequently associated with cold fronts and mesoscale convective systems due to increased cloud cover. The effects of low-level jet (LLJ) events on thermal stratification and water quality, however, remain undescribed, particularly for tropical reservoirs. Here, water temperature time series are combined with meteorological data, LIDAR observations, ERA5 reanalysis data, and hydrodynamical modeling to investigate the impact of an event of LLJ over the Furnas hydropower reservoir in Brazil. The LLJ event was characterized by dry, intense, and persistent winds (~10 m s-1) blowing for more than 12 hours over the main fetch of the reservoir. In the downwind side of the lake, the surface mixed layer depth increased by 50% during the LLJ event. The changes to the water column were produced by a combination of wind-induced upwelling, shear-driven mixing, and nocturnal convective overturning, different from the heat balance expected during passing cold fronts and mesoscale convective systems. The results suggest that both momentum and heat fluxes during LLJ events need to be accounted for in lake modelings to reproduce the vertical mixing process.
